What is Blackening?

Blackening salmon is the process of rubbing your salmon with oil or butter and easy seasoning. Then the salmon is cooked on high heat to toast the spices so they give the salmon a rich, tasty flavor.

The oil or butter helps the spices to really heat up on the outside but still keeping the inside of the salmon moist and juicy. This also helps to give the outer texture that dark coloring.

What are Blackening Spices?

There are many blackening spices that you are already blended that you can buy. But usually these contain ingredients that we can not pronounce. I like to make my own which allows me to control what I add.

A simple blackening spices include the following:

  • Onion Powder
  • Garlic Powder
  • Cayenne Pepper
  • Oregano
  • Salt and Pepper
  • Paprika

The great thing about making your own as you can add what you have on hand. Some recipes even add in some brown sugar to really caramelize the salmon texture.

  • Oil Griddle –Before placing the Salmon on the Griddle make sure you olive oil the griddle. You can also use melted butter. This prevents the salmon from sticking to the griddle.
