This griddle sandwich is a family favorite as we love the Patty Melt’s at Freddy’s. We love making copycat recipes as it saves me time and money.
This flavorful patty melt is easy to make with simple ingredients. Some may call it a sandwich others call it a burger, it is the perfect blend of both. It doesn’t matter what you call it, it is delicious. You might also like Blackstone Freddy’s Steakburger Recipe.
What is a Patty Melt?
A patty melt is usually made with two hamburger patties that is topped with slice cheese and grilled onions. The burgers, grilled cheese and onions are placed between two slices of bread. We used rye bread but you can also sourdough bread.
Ingredients:
- Slices Rye Bread
- Ground Beef
- White Onion, sliced
- Butter
- Slices Swiss Cheese
- You can also add Freddy’s Steakburger Seasoning
How to Make Freddy’s Patty Melt at Home:
- Preheat the Blackstone Grill over medium low heat or high heat (approximately 450 degrees F). Divide the ground beef into 2 even balls (approximately 3 oz each).
- Butter one side of each piece of the Rye bread with 1 Tablespoon of the butter.
- Melt the remaining butter on one side of the flat top. Then top the melted butter with the sliced onions. Sauté the onions in the butter until they are caramelized (3-5 minutes).
- While the onions are cooking, place the ground beef on the grill. Put a piece of parchment paper on top of the beef and use a spatula or a burger press to smash the meat into 2 thin patties.
- Let the patties cook until they are golden browned and crispy (2-3 minutes). Then flip the patties over (do not smash) and cook the other side for 2-3 minutes until it is also browned and crispy.
- Place a piece of the Swiss cheese on each burger patty on skillet and melt.
- Put the bread on the blackstone grill butter side down and toast the bread.
- Then assemble the sandwich. Place one piece of the bread on a plate (toasted side down). Then top with 1 of the patties, half of the fried onions, then the remaining patty. The rest of the fried onions and top with the 2nd piece of bread (toasted side on top).
- Cut in half and the patty melt is ready to serve and enjoy!I like to season with salt and pepper.
What to put on a Patty Melt?
The Patty Melt is made with simple toppings. They can be changed to what you have on hand.
- Bread – You can use sourdough or artisan bread if you prefer, but Freddies does use Rye Bread in their recipe.
- Cheese – You can easily use any of your favorite types of cheese in this recipe if you do not like Swiss Cheese.
- Caramelized Onions – Adding grilled onions makes the patty taste amazing. It is so easy to cook the onions on the griddle.
- Sauce – Most Patty Melts have a sauce which similar to a Thousand Island Dressing.
What to Serve with a Patty Melt?
When planning on serving a patty melt they are best served fresh. But when making them we like to serve with different sides. Here are some of our favorites:
- French Fries on Blackstone
- How to Fry Onions for Burgers
- Blackstone Fried Potatoes
How to Store:
These patty melts are best served fresh. If you do have leftovers, I would store the hamburger and onions separately from the bread. Place in a air tight container for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.
How to Reheat:
Reheat patty melt in the microwave or on the Blackstone Griddle if you want to toast some more bread.
