Turkey, ranking second in Europe and ninth globally in the number of plastic surgeons, is a popular destination for medical tourism.
In 2018, medical tourism in Turkey was estimated to be worth around £1.8 billion.
The reason for this growing demand in procedures can be attributed to a number of factors, the main ones being that the country has a wealth of well-educated, talented and experienced plastic surgeons, as well as that these procedures are performed at a much lower cost compared to the UK and rest of Europe. This is because of the fact that labour and operational costs are relatively lower in Turkey.
British patients’ growing interest in Turkey
There’s no question that Turkey is growing in popularity from patients in the United Kingdom, with liposuction, breast implant, tummy tuck, rhinoplasty, breast lift, and facial surgery among the most popular treatments. Many patients have their plastic surgery treatments at lower costs in Turkey and go back to the UK with great satisfaction.
Gulsultan Dogan, founder of MCAN Health - a medical travel company based in Istanbul - is concerned that negative news stories have harmed Turkey’s image as a destination for affordable cosmetic surgery.
She said: “It is worrying because it spreads misinformation and misleads the patients in the UK. Generalisation is dangerous, and there may be good and bad surgeons anywhere. Turkey has many prestigious, reputable and experienced plastic surgeons.”

Gulsultan says the company's number one priority is the well-being of its patients as well as their satisfaction. She said: “Plastic surgery is not like make-up; it is a surgery.
