What is the current U.S. main battle tank? ›

The M1A2 Abrams is a formidable main battle tank used by the U.S. Army. Weighing around 68 tons, it features advanced armor, firepower and mobility. Its primary armament includes a 120mm Smooth Bore gun capable of firing various types of ammunition, enhancing its effectiveness against armored targets.

The older RPG-7 anti-tank grenade launcher won't penetrate an Abrams' thick armored hide, but the newer PG-29V claimed at least one tank in 2007. Many countries are developing or looking to develop a next-generation main battle tank for the conflicts of the future. The United States military is working on the M1A3 Abrams, ditching an updated version of the M1A2 for a new, more advanced tank.

Among the U.S. forces, one of its most distinguished elements, who spearheaded the assault and whose accomplishments were pivotal to changing the tide of war, is the 1st Infantry Division, also known as the "Big Red One".
