University of Sydney Doctor of Dental Medicine | OzTREKK (2024)

Overview

For more than 100 years, the University of Sydney School of Dentistry has provided education and training in dentistry and oral health, creating exceptional graduates, conducting research with a real-world impact and offering continuing education. The faculty is one of the largest of the dental schools in Australia and is housed within the Sydney Dental Hospital (SDH), Surry Hills and the Westmead Centre for Oral Health (WCOH), Westmead Hospital.

The Sydney Doctor of Dental Medicine has been purposefully designed to adhere to the well-rounded course structure of the North American postgraduate dental school model but has also maintained the sophisticated clinical training for which the University of Sydney has come to be renowned, giving students an applicable knowledge of dental health from the community to the laboratory.

When you study dentistry at the University of Sydney, you know you will receive a world-class education, and upon graduation, will have gained competitive credentials that will allow you to pursue your career goals in Canada with the addition of having the great experiences only found while studying abroad.

Program

Throughout the four-year program, you will develop your clinical skills through early patient-based teaching and are given the necessary foundations for independent learning through simulated exercises at a research hospital.

Responsibility and leadership skills are built upon in the early years of the Doctor of Dental Medicine program as you will benefit from supervised learning in a clinical setting outside the university by the end of the second year of the program. Practical development outside of the faculty serves to bolster the clinical component of the dental program through immersion in the field, and by your final year, you will have experience in Australian dentistry practices ranging from metropolitan clinics to rural hamlets.

Beginning in the first year and continuing throughout the dental program, postgraduate coursework is coupled with technical training. The comprehensive design of the Doctor of Dental Medicine assures students that they will have a complete and thorough knowledge of all aspects of the dental health profession. Throughout the program, you will study modules covering tooth conservation, trauma, oral surgery, periodontology, and many others.

The final year commences with an intensive course in advanced restorative techniques, Fixed Prosthodontics and Implantology. Following this, integrated learning activities continue through the presentation of lectures, tutorial sessions, problem-based learning and evidence-based practice sessions. The majority of your time will be spent in clinical practice in metropolitan, rural and remote community clinics.
